October Fourteenth Two Thousand Seventeen

An open letter to my friends and family,

Here I am in month two of the world race in the beautiful country of Haiti, more specifically in the city I have fallen madly in love with in four days, Montrouis (pronounced: Moh-Wee). Ministry looks like spending time with the granmoun (creol for elderly), spending time with kids outside of our compound, putting on bible clubs in the school yard, singing in a Hatian church choir, and visiting an orphanage for special needs children and children effected by the earthquake of 2010. I fall asleep each night wondering how I fall more in love with this place every day. The kids have learned my name (or at least what they pronounce my name as [usually keysey or ketsey]).

They spend each day just waiting for us to come outside and play. There is an ocean about a three minute walk from our little pink house that we go play with the kids at whenever we get a chance. There are three neighborhood kids specifically who have stolen my heart in just a mere four days. Cardola, a 14 year old beautiful little girl. Kayquol (pronounced: K-Cool), the most gentle 11 year old boy I’ve ever known. And sweet sweet Abigail, she’s probably 5 or 6 and she is the sassiest little girl who loves to jump and swim. I love my life here.

Today especially was one of the greatest days of my life. We went off to VBS bible club this morning where I got to sing and dance with Abi and Cardola and many other kiddos and talk about the story of the prodigal son. When we finished there we headed back to our house and got ready to go to the children’s home. I didn’t know how crazy in love I would actually fall until I got inside the gates. Sammy, oh Samuel, a sweet little four year old with hydrocephalus (someone please tell Laurie to read this blog). He was found around age 3 laying in a pile of trash on the verge of death. Oh how my heart broke. I held him all afternoon.

I saw God today in that moment. I dreamed of being able to work at a children’s home for a long time and showed me right then he will give us the desires of our hearts even when it doesn’t feel like he is doing anything. It did my heart wonders to watch Sammy roll around and listen to him giggle when the puppies barked. I am beyond thankful for sweet moments like this that I will hold forever in my lifetime.

Please keep my team and all the other teams in your prayers as our ministry days are very full and we want to serve to the best of our ability to the beautiful people in Haiti.
