Hola from Honduras, the murder capitol of the world! Honduras also supplies 80% of the cocaine that is trafficked into the United States, has an unemployment rate of over 70% and futbol is the number 1 activity followed closely behind sex. These aren’t the happiest stats you have probably ever heard but despite the hurt, and despair in Honduras- Jesus is here and wants to have a relationship with the Hondurans, and the Hondurans want to know Jesus.
This month our ministry is at El Corazon de Christo in El Ermita, Honduras. This ministry has been a refuge for girls and their children for the past nine years. The girls are all under the age of 18 and have been sexually abused or pregnant due to rape or incest.
Along with taking in and caring for these young women and their children El Corazon de Christo does so many other things for the community of Talanga including worship services, giving out Christmas presents, spiritual counseling, and taking in anyone in need of help. A project that we have been working on the past few weeks is going out into the village and asking the residents to fill out surveys so that they can receive food from the World Food Foundation if they meet the restrictions.
While in the village every day I have experienced hospitality like I have never before in my life. Every single house has invited us strange gringos into their homes, let us play with their children, given us fresh bananas, let us take photos with them, laugh and have conversation, and pray for them as well as receive prayer. My high school spanish skills can only go so far but love has no language barriers.
Day by day, prayer by prayer, and person by person God is changing this community one person’s life at a time. It only takes 1 person to change another person’s life. Not a special person, just a loving ordinary person.
So while I have all of those stats in my head and can feel the despair all around, God has been showing me that I can’t rescue and save all of Honduras and fix its problems as much as I want to. The Holy Spirit is going to be the one to come in and change things and I just need to rest in that.
