My Awakening
There is no ‘one word’ answer to explain how the World Race changed me. When asked at final debrief for one word and maybe two sentences to describe my year: my response was “supercalifragilisticexpealidocious. Cause sometimes you need a spoonful of sugar to get it all down. And other times you don’t know what to say.”
Yes, the Race was ‘fun,’ ‘an adventure,’ etc. Yes, I saw and experienced a lot. I know I was greatly blessed with this opportunity and support from so many. I’d love to sit and talk if you want about all I saw God do in those 11 months.
If I had to give advice to a future Racer, it would be this: Be Awake.
Throughout the last year I was awakened to so much about myself, about the world and about God, I didn’t even know I had been asleep.
Sometimes I go through my days in a haze and don’t pay attention to things happening around me. Sadly, I even allowed this on the Race. Travel and ministry days became normal and I was ‘asleep‘ to so many opportunities around me; opportunities to love & serve my team/squad, hosts, and others.
During worship my squad often sang a mash-upish of ‘Wake Up’ by All Sons and Daughters and ‘The Anthem’ by Josh Hamilton.
‘wake up child, it’s your time to shine
You were born for such a time as this
Wake up, wake up, wake up all you sleepers
Stand up, stand up, stand up all you dreamers..’
When I returned my sister had purchased ‘Undaunted‘ by Christine Caine and she lent it to me. This book helped me put words to some stuff I found on the Race and some things I am still figuring out. But now, I am awake. I am awake to hearing God’s voice speak directly to me, I am awake to the life others speak into me, I am awake to the problems of this world, I am awake to the fact even a small change can make a huge difference. I am AWAKE.
So if you are looking into the World Race, know it won’t meet your expectations – try not to have many expectations, know that you will be wrecked for the gospel, know you will come back incomplete because your heart will be left in so many places; be awake & be ready for God to rock your world.
Stay tuned to find out what is coming up next in my life! It’s gonna be great and I am super excited 🙂
