So this past week I totally felt like my team and I were part of Todd's crew from Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. This month we have the privilege of ministering to Mayan widows and orphans in the city of Santo Domingo Xenacoj  where 90% of the population is Mayan. One of our first ministry projects was to go to a village and tear down the remains of a widows home so that another team could rebuild a more durable one for she and her children. Upon arrival our ministry contact shared his heart for his people and shed tears as he told us how poorly widows are treated. Our other contact said "you can never give them too many hugs". We prayed for the widow, her family and the village and hugged on her before diving in. She was so grateful and smiled a lot with excitement and anticipation for the completion of her new home. She shared that her husband had died 8 years ago from diabetes. As we tore down her old home that was made of bamboo I encountered big spiders and disgusting centipedes that I typically would have freaked out about and called it quits…but I got over myself and my fears in those moments…because it wasn't about me AT ALL. There were two little Mayan boys from the village that watched us for the longest time and then came and helped. They worked so hard as if it were their home.  At the end of the day the team and I walked away having completed a job well done, selflessly and purposefully.
