It all began, as most things do, with good
intentions. There’s a Jonathan David
Helser song called ‘Likeness of Jesus’, and it goes:
“I wanna be holy, as He is holy, I wanna be righteous, as He is righteous, I wanna be loving, as He is loving, but most of all, I wanna be like Jesus.”
I wanna be like Jesus. And because we all know that Jesus had blue eyes and long, flowing locks (Have I been in Catholic South America too long?), I figured I might as well start with the hair, right?
Okay, I’m kidding, that’s not why I haven’t cut my hair since leaving for the Race in January. But, for better or for worse, it’s getting pretty long.
For the past 10 years or so, through most of high school and college, my hair was kept pretty normal. My ‘style’, if you want to call it that, is pretty normal, and my hair followed in suit.
I had the Extremely Short for a long time.
Then I had the Pretty Short for a while.
But, with no scissors here on the Race, I’ve grown accustomed to the Pretty-Long-and-Pretty-Mop-Like.
I arrived in Nicaragua a few days ago, and I’m in a town called Candelaria at the New Song Mission, and it’s awesome. Speaking of awesome…
Meet Diego, my main contact at New Song.
This is the Cornrowed-Curly-Mohawk.
Experts on the matter have applauded it’s complexity, calling it quite contemporary, with strong Kevin Federline influences, and subtle hints of Fonzie and Rufio from ‘Hook’.
It’s different and controversial. It’s crazy and completely unique from anything I’ve ever thought about doing. It draws a whole lot of attention (like being a gringo isn’t enough). Hmm. Maybe it has the Likeness of Jesus after all…
So, hopefully there will be more to come. That photo of Diego was from a few years ago in college. These days, he’s working on his dreads. Just sayin’.
