I’m not a super picky eater, but I do have some foods I absolutely despise. These are the things I’d rather go hungry than eat. Here is the list in order: peanut butter, cereal, ham, jelly, hot dogs, american cheese, and pepperoni. I’ll eat most everything else willingly and joyfully.
There was this one time in India I remember vividly:
It was a Sunday, and I was starving. I remember looking at the clock and being agitated because I had to wait another hour to eat. When breakfast rolled around I climbed out of my tent hoping for some raman with carrots and cabbage, or maybe fried eggs, or rice and some sort of yellow lental sauce or chickpeas.
I walked to where we were eating. And there was nothing on the table. Or so I thought. Hiding behind my team was a “large” box of Honey & Almond Cornflakes. I was so disappointed. I debated not eating. But when it is 91 degrees and 85% humidity, and you’re not getting dinner until around 8pm that night, choosing not to eat isn’t an option.
Cereal!!
The number of things I have eaten on the race I hate is … the entire list above! But it is always okay. I ate a bowl of Cornflakes and drank a orange squash juice. I didn’t enjoy the taste, and it wasn’t satisfying, but it was okay.
On the race you give up control. On the race you eat things you hate. On the race you sacrifice what you think you need to live a life of service.
I have found over and over again that no matter how much or how little food I get, God sustains me. I have found that no matter how much I dislike what I am eating, God always helps me get it down. But more importantly, I have found that everytime I sacrifice what I think I want or need, it is worth it. In this case, I wasn’t hungry; there are benefits in even the smallest sacrifice.
I don’t plan on eating Pb&J or cornflakes when I go home, but I will be grateful for the opportunity to eat what I want. Here is how to make Almond & Honey Cornflakes:
Directions:
(1) Drive to a grocery store.
(2) Walk to the cereal aisle and select the Honey & Almond Cornflakes.
(3) Check out.
(4) Drive home.
(5) Pour cornflakes into a bowl.
(6) Eat with hands.
