Have you ever been to a place and just known it was home? Has it ever happened at a home that wasn’t yours? It is the craziest feeling in the world.
This feeling of home at place other than mine has happened to me twice in my life.
The first time happened when I walked into the Craig and Debbie Walker’s house the summer I entered 4th grade. The second was September 3rd, 2015 at a mission compound in a large Mozambican village. Both times, I felt like I entered into a loving embrace when I crossed the threshold. Both times, you could physically feel the Holy Spirit’s presence. And both times, it was a gift.
Anne lived in the home on the compound. Anne goes by Mama to all of the locals and all of the Brazilians who come do ministry alongside them. Anne is the epitome of a mama. I love Anne, and I was terribly sad leaving her home.
Anne is a brilliant cook. I cooked in her kitchen a lot. Each time she would pop her head in and give me a pointer, all of which I took.
Anne shared stories about her friends, her son and granddaughter, and about her life experiences. Her husband Johan was always piping in behind her to give my team sage words. Both Johan and Anne had life experience and wisdom to impart on us, and they partnered up so as to never miss the opportunity. I wish I had enough paper to write it all down.
Anne has a heart of joy. She says “nothing is ever a crisis.” And she handles each situation that arose with more patience than would be expected and plenty of grace to go around. Anne loves so well.
Anne was a blessing to me and my team. She filled our spirits and refreshed us each day. She and Johan sent us off on our journey full and ready. They sent us off better than when we arrived, and they did it by being themselves. They did it because Jesus is in them.
Anne has a beautiful soul, and she is a wonderful mama. She was my mama for the 23 days I lived under her roof. She is mama to the community she ministers to. Like all mamas she imparts her wisdom on her children. She spends time fellowshipping and listening to stories. She finds your passions and builds you up in them. She calls out your talents. She searches your heart with questions not because she is nosey but because she loves you.
And most importantly, she fills you up and sends you on your way better than when you came to her – just like the best mamas do.
Anne is a treasure and a gift. Anne is unforgettable. Anne is mama.
