This month we are living in three different housing situations. There are 19 of us together this month consisting of three teams. I’m living with 7 girls in a two room house with a family of three. One of those being a baby who is 5 months old who we haven’t met yet because he is in the hospital with a virus. There are 3 guys living down on the farm with two brothers from the orphanage, and there are 8 people living at Vitole’s house with his wife and three small children. We are also blessed that this month the women from the city are cooking all our meals for us. This month definitely looks more like we are on the WR compared to our last month when we were living in a huge house and sitting at café’s every day. The only thing I purchase here are snickers after meals because I’m usually still hungry.
Here are some random facts things I have learned about the country of Moldova and the city of Cornesti.
- Moldova is the poorest country in Eastern Europe.
- When entering a house in Moldova you must take off your shoes.
- It is very cold in October in Moldova.
- Half the population has left in the last 10 years.
- There are lots of children orphaned do to their parents immigrating out of Moldova.
- Alcoholism is high in the country
- Flies are in abundance in all the houses
- Our city doesn’t have heat or gasoline
- There is only one well in the city and when WR teams come they run out of water
- In Moldova you don’t sit inside between a cross breeze because you might catch something.
- You don’t look someone in the eye while talking to them.
- Girls should not sit on cold cement because then they will become infertile
- Beavers are a delicacy and we will eat one before we leave this month
- If you ask someone to help them they will say no, no, yes. You need to ask someone three times before it will be answered honestly.
- We only shower once a week on Monday's when we head into a city to the sauna/bar place that you pay for an hour in the sauna and shower.
- You can put 19 people into a van and make it safely into the city, but you might not be able to walk when you get out of the van.
