“Normal” in Vietnam

 
It’s “normal” to see people everywhere

It’s “normal” to build relationships with the smoothie lady because you go there everyday

It’s “normal” to hang out at cafés to speak English with people who come in

It’s “normal” to have your squad come up with a phrase like “oh back in nam”

It’s “normal” to be asked several times a day if you want to buy sunglasses form a peddler

It’s “normal” to at times and at certain locations pretend you are from Canada because America is not talked about nicely.

It’s “normal” to find no Vietnamese at the beach during the day because they don’t want to be tan

It’s “normal” for tourist to go out and have drinks at the sidewalk bar for really cheap

It’s “normal” to pray for meals with your eyes open like you are talking to someone so no one knows you are praying

It’s “normal” to worship in the park and have people come and ask if they can speak English with you

It’s “normal” to take a cab where ever you go and hope they know where they are going

It’s “normal” to think of the hunger games every time someone mentions that something is in one of the districts.

It’s “normal” to hold real tight to your belongings because people on motos will rip/ cut it off of you

It’s “normal” to find the cheapest food in your area and cheapest things to do (bowling, pool, popcorn)

It’s “normal” for every restaurant to have an upstairs where the Air con is

It’s “normal” to find Dr.Pepper in the local stores

It’s “normal” to have facebook not work because the government shut it off

It’s “normal” to go to international church and feel a bit of culture shock with an entire service in English

It’s “normal” to cross streets praying that the motos and taxis stop for you

It’s “normal” to ask people in South Vietnam about eating dog and them be disgusted and say they only do
that in the north.  (However I was able to try it and it is not bad)

It’s “normal” to have food venders on the street who serve pho (special noodle soup)

It’s “normal” for everything to be closed by 10pm in the city

It’s “normal” when you go to the park to have a newspaper handed to you to sit on

It’s “normal” to see people in love with Jesus even in a country that is not open to it.
