San Pedro is a beautiful town that sits on Lake Atitlan. It
is in the middle of several mountains. One is called The Indian’s Face because that is exactly what it looks like. The
women here play vital roles in the family. They work in the markets selling their
families fresh food or veggies or whatever goods they might make. In the
mornings, the streets are the busiest because the venders all have their
produce out. You can walk up and down the aisles and fill your nose with the
most amazing smells of fresh food. You will see several women walking with huge
baskets on their heads carrying whatever they have for sale. The land here is
all sloped so they walk up and down the streets all day. The women also wear
traditional clothing. They make all of there clothes with beautiful bright
colors and they wear them proudly. The entire town washes their clothes along
the side of the lake on rocks. I’ve been here a week and I think I’ve fallen in
love with this place. There are a small group of tourist-like travelers that
come through here. Most are from the states, or are European. So it is nice to
have some English speaking company. A lot of the people hear speak Spanish but
the language is some type of Guatemalan dialect that is not very similar to
Spanish.
We went into the city yesterday and my friend Betty went to
talk to a man that was selling kayaking and other activities to tourists. Five
minutes into the conversation, he began to try to sell her something else;
something along the lines of spiritual cleansing. He goes on to tell her that
there are several “Mayan priests” that live in caves in the surrounding
mountains. He asks what in her life she needs help with, like a boyfriend or
help with a relationship, or favor in life. He says that tourists often come looking
for spiritual insight so he takes them on a boat ride and up into the cave of
one the “Mayan priests” and it is there that they are helped with whatever they
need in life.

Upon our team’s arrival we learned that there are people
here that are desperately searching for meaning in life and for Spiritual
guidance. This is why the Lord has placed us here. The “Mayan priests” are
actually witch doctors that live in the mountains. They bring about as much
spiritual cleansing as a pile of dirt. So, my team this month will be setting
up different places in the town holding signs that say free spiritual
cleansing. We will be playing worship songs and praying for people that come.
We will be sharing our testimonies of the peace, joy, freedom, son and daughtership,
and love of the father. We will be bringing the Holy Spirit into the town of
San Pedro and pouring out on all that are willing to receive the Kingdom of the
Heaven. The Father has put on my heart specifically this month that He is
calling me to be a warrior. He is telling me that there are people who He needs
for me to fight the Spiritual battles for because they can’t quite fight for
themselves yet. This is a month of continual prayer and communication with the
Father in every moment of every day. I am excited to watch Him move as we obey
where He calls us!
