To be honest, I don’t really know what to write. I’m kind of still processing this first week in Haiti. It is a BEAUTIFUL island, but the poverty and living conditions here are crazy. Knowing ahead of time about the poverty and hopelessness, I thought I would be a little more prepared for what was in store.
Dirt poor. It’s a term we sling around in the States a lot, but it became real to me this week. There are children in the dirty streets with no shoes on, clothes that are literally falling apart, and are often times asking for food and water. Today we encountered an 8 year old boy who has no parents. No home. Sleeping in the streets at night and begging other starving people for food is all he can do on a day to day basis. He didn’t even have shoes on his feet.
And it’s not just children either. The ministry we are working with here in Haiti has two different 24-hr care homes for the elderly. They call them “Matthew 25” houses.
“For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat; I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink; I was a stranger and you took me in; I was naked and you clothed me; I was sick and you took care of me; I was in prison and you visited me.”
Matthew 25:35-36
One of the elderly men that they recently took in was found sleeping under a pile of trash in the streets because he has no family to care for him. Sadly, that’s the case with most elderly people in Haiti. From the young to the old, the people of Haiti are eager for a hope that can only be found in Christ.
The good news is that The Lord is moving here in Haiti! People are turning to Him everyday. Just this past week we have seen multiple people in two different communities ask us how they can know Jesus personally, and we have had the privilege to introduce them to the God who loves them and created them with a purpose.
(This is the community of Peresse. We did evangelism here today and one man gave his life to Christ and two women recommitted their lives to God. We also got to pray for many other members of this community one on one.)
Please pray for us as we seek to be used by God in this very dark place. For His love to be made evident in the lives of others, and that people would find hope in Jesus and not in the material things that we have to offer.
