Dear Peru,
What a perfect end to a perfect Continent. You encapsulated every feeling I had for the beginning of my Race and gave me an amazing time in return.
Each week during my time with you was different than the last. You brought me so much adventure and people I will call family. You filled me with joy and I am so grateful for my time with you.
Week one, you showed me the beauty of your creation juxtaposed with the brokenness of a people who worship idols within that creation. You taught me that no matter where in the world you are, BINGO will kill it at a senior center. You showed me that sometimes you have to face your biggest fears (cows) to be able to go to the bathroom. And you taught me that cat jokes are the way to win the heart of a 4 year old Cassia.
Week two, you taught me that Machu Picchu is as gorgeous as everyone says. Ministry can look like cutting egg carton after egg carton to singing in front of a congregation last minute. You taught me that scissors are hard to find in papelerias, and sometimes, even when you ask 10 times for clarification, miscommunications can happen. You taught me that cookie dough and brownie mix go well together when you make midnight runs to the store in the rain, and that everything is no matter.
Week three, you showed me how hospitality can go a long way and that someone offering to do your laundry can bring you to tears. You showed me that spending time with your hosts is so important and being silly can bring people together. You let me show off my creativity and teaching ability through decorating for and participating in a VBS and you let me fee like a kid again.
Man Peru, our time together was a blast. I wouldn’t have wanted a more perfect ending to South America than the time we shared. You have a huge part of my heart.
Love you muchly,
Katy May
