I had a lot of expectations for India. Most people that heard the countries on my route became hesitant when I said I was going to India first. I was told it would be a complete culture shock. I began thinking that India would be the hardest month for me. I thought that if I made it through India, the rest of my race would be easier.
Yes, it can be difficult living in India. The culture is very different and can be quite overwhelming. The city is loud and cars are honking and driving all over the road. It’s hot. Personal space is not a thing. People are constantly staring and taking pictures. Wherever we go, we draw a crowd. We eat rice and curry at every meal. I’m learning how to power through all the spice.
But honestly, it’s not that bad. It’s been a cool experience.
We are staying in a little village in south India and it is beautiful! My team and I spend a lot of our time on the roof. It has an amazing view of lemon trees and mountains in the distance. Our host family is so hospitable and full of love. There are 12 children living here as well. I can not even begin to tell you how much joy and happiness these children give me. Even through the language barrier, we find ways to communicate. We get to laugh, have fun and spread the love of Jesus everyday.
Every evening we drive to another village to do ministry. We get to share our testimonies and preach the gospel. It is a beautiful thing to see a bunch of people from India getting together to worship, especially in a country where it isn’t easy to be a Christian. It is really encouraging.
I find it funny that I thought month 1 in India would be my hardest month. I’m pretty sure God is just getting started.
