Month 6 of The World Race is here! After two long nights and most of a day on a bus, I can happily say that I have made it to the beautiful, green and hilly country of Rwanda. My team is living in a small town outside of the capital city called Kabuga. It is a fun little town with lots of winding dirt roads that take you up and down hills lined with banana trees.
We spend our days teaching English classes to people in the community. We have morning classes for children and evening classes for the adults. I have such a blast teaching the children. We are always greeted with sweet smiles and hugs. They are such eager learners as well! The adult class has been interesting. It mainly consists of young men, so just imagine the kind of questions and conversations brought up to an all girl's team.
Sundays we attend church from 9:30am to anywhere between 1:30 and 2:30 (although according to the pastor church only goes until 12:30). We preach each Sunday as well as get randomly called up to perform musical numbers. This week we will be getting measured for our traditional Rwandan dresses so that we will look smart (good looking/well dressed) on Sundays. I can't wait.
The modes of transportation here are always an adventure. On days that we don't feel like cramming into a stuffy van with 20 other people and at times chickens, we have the option of riding on the back of a bicycle (to be ridden side saddle since we are ladies) or on the back of a motorcycle (my personal favorite).
I think I've had more bananas in my week and half here in Rwanda than I ever have in my life. Fresh bananas, boiled bananas, boiled bananas with sauce, fried bananas (whole and like chips/fries), etc. Yeah, I have been eating a lot of bananas here.
My favorite time of day is afternoon tea. They have the most delicious tea here that reminds me of the chai I drink back home. It is so nice to be able to relax over a cup of tea with my teammates.
Rwanda is such an amazing place and I am excited to be spending a month here!!!
