Carpenter Shinkango didn’t know what to do. He needed work to provide for his wife, children and grandchildren, but there was no work to be had as of late for his skills. Though he was a member of the local church, he was thinking about visiting the witch doctor in hopes he would be able to do something spiritual to bring work to the carpenter.

The Indigenous Baptist Church of Zomba had a wonderful cement building situated on the side of a mountain overlooking all of the town in the valley below, with a view of Zomba Mountain across the way. But inside the church there was nothing but a rough dirt floor. Church members sat on dirty tarps with hopes of someday having better.

When 5-Alive visited Zomba in February, they simply made a God-connection between the two. The only thing lacking? …money, as usual. With their blogs, that was easily taken care of. They entrusted me with cash as Kiatera followed in their footsteps to outreach in Malawi.

5-Alive raised more than $800 to pay for the construction & purchase of furniture for the church, to be completed by Carpenter Shinkango.

20 basic benches w/out backs
10 “fancy” benches with backs
9 bags of concrete for the floor
6 chairs for the elders and Pastor
1 pulpit
1 table

Carpenter Shinkango never stopped grinning both times we visited him to work out the details of the deal, sign the handwritten contract and see the beginnings of the product. He’s a talented man, producing beautiful work. And thanks to the God-connection and 5-Alive’s involvement by raising money–thanks to all those back in America who donated–Carpenter Shinkango has quite a larger order to fulfill.

He no longer needs to visit the witch doctor to ask for help producing work. He can feed his family a little while longer. His and his wife’s faith in the one true God has been strengthened. Their hearts have been encouraged.

And the people of the Indigenous Baptist Church of Zomba will have beautiful furniture to complete their beautiful building in their beautiful town in the warm heart of Africa.

It was a win-win-win situation for all parties involved.

Praise God!
