When I was in college I went through the McDonald’s drive thru once and I ordered a large coca-cola. I had a long exam that night and all I wanted was a caffeine boost to help me survive the night. (I also was convinced that I tested better after I drank coca-cola), anyways, it probably cost something around $1.29 and I planned on paying for it with all the quarters in the change compartment of my car. That thing was always overflowing with coins. I got to the window and realized I had no quarters, but only what seemed to be a ridiculous amount of pennies, nickels, and a few dimes. I pulled my car off to the side and was horrified to find out that I did, in fact, not have enough coins to buy the coke. I went in and decided to pay for it with my debit card, but my card was declined. I embarrassedly told them I didn’t want the coke anymore and I rushed my way to school (and probably failed the exam). This is just an embarrassing story about a time that I really didn’t have any money to share with anyone, and that’s okay.
A realization has dawned on me that I am officially (as of about a year and a half ago), “that person” who asks for money on Facebook. And this is a formal NOT-apology for it.
I’m currently at debrief in Nepal with my whole squad, and leadership has a vision for tonight. We are doing a 12 hour burn (which means 12 hours of straight prayer and worship) through the night. We are all signing up for a time slot and the whole night gets covered by all 45(ish) of us. The reason for us sacrificing sleep to worship our God is simple; God moves.
Tonight’s focus for prayer and worship is to have our WHOLE squad FULLY FUNDED! One thing God has been teaching me about so much already at this debrief is how this squad is my church. We are the body of Christ. We are a family, and we share each others burdens. We’ve organized tonight so that if each person on the squad can raise roughly $500, the whole squad will be DONE with fundraising! That means tonight, we have an insane goal to raise $20,000! The $500 I am responsible for earning will be going to my friend and team leader, Greg! Greg has been an amazing friend to me this year and I’ve learned so much from him. He’s poured into me so much as a leader and I’m so excited to get the honor to help him out! If you want to help me reach this goal, keep reading to find out how! (Even if you don’t want to help me reach this goal, keep reading haha!)
All I’m asking for is $10. I have 50 blog subscribers, and if each of my subscribers would support my friend Greg in his fundraising, I will have raised my $500. I can’t imagine that all 50 of my subscribers will be able to donate, so even if you AREN’T a subscriber, you still have a part in this! I serve a big God who is excited by big prayers. He is not intimidated by money, and he knows where each dollar will come from. All I can ask of YOU tonight is to search your heart and see if God is leading you to donate $10 to Greg. I promise you that I understand not having even $5 to spare in your wallet. Sometimes, every penny is owned by someone or something else before you even get your paycheck, and that’s just a tough reality for some people (especially you broke college kids!). BUT, I do believe that God does bless his people and he gives them a heart for missions and I do believe that tonight, he just might be asking YOU to donate. PRAY! Ask him. You can directly partner with this beautiful church by letting God use you to donate just $10.
So, why is this my formal NOT-apology? Because God is healing the sick. He’s breaking addictions. He’s restoring hope. I’ve watched people cry their eyes out because they’ve finally experienced God’s love for the first time in their lives. So, I just can’t find it in me to be sorry for asking for money when I’ve seen so many people be set free as a result of the money that YOU guys have generously given.
Take 2 minutes right now, and ask God if he wants you to be one of the 50 people to donate $10. If he is asking, be obedient to him. I promise you the reward for obedience is great. Luke 11:28 says “He replied, “Blessed are those who hear the word of God and obey it.” How cool is it that if you choose to be a blessing, God promises that you yourself will be blessed! Tonight, I’m giving you the opportunity to be a giver.
If you feel that tugging in your heart or that desire to be apart of something bigger than life itself, go to Greg’s blog and donate directly from there 🙂
