“First, remember, remember, remember the signs. Say them to yourself when you wake in the morning and when you lie down at night, and when wake in the middle of the night. And whatever strange things may happen to you, let nothing turn your mind from following the signs. And secondly, I give you a warning. Here on the mountain I have spoken to you clearly: I will not often do so down in Narnia. Here on the mountain, the air is clear and your mind is clear; as you drop down into Narnia, the air will thicken. Take great care that is does not confuse your mind. And the signs which you have learned here will not look at all as you expect them to look, when you meet them there. That is why is it so important to know them by heart and pay no attention to appearances. Remember the signs and believe the signs. Nothing else matters. And now daughter of Eve, Farewell.”
As I have been thinking about the impending World Race beginning in August 2016, this part of C.S. Lewis’ novel The Silver Chair has been ever present in my mind. This quote is taken from the beginning of the book, just after Eustace Clarence Scrubb (and he almost deserved it) fell off the mountain and was blown down to Narnia. Aslan the Great Lion is speaking to Jill Pole, telling her that she and the boy have been called to His country to rescue a prince. I love this part dearly, because he is explaining that nothing will be as it seems. Things seem so clear while you stand on the mountain, looking down at the world. The air is clear, the clouds are below you, the giants seem small… but He reminds her that when she is in the thick of it, when strange things happen she must remember the signs… Remember the promises… Remember Him.
“Here on the mountain I have spoken to you clearly: I will not often do so down in Narnia.”
He is always there. Always will he be watching and protecting and working even when he is not audibly talking in your ear. Remember the signs, Katie. As you go off to eleven countries. Remember who I am. Remember what I have done. Remember my signs.
