At the orphanage this month, I
was able to get close to a lot of kids of all ages, but there were 5 girls
between age 15 and 20 that I got especially close to. One of them was a girl
that has lived in the orphanage her whole life. I never got to hear her story
about why she was at the orphanage, but we got to talk a lot about her future
plans. Right now she is a junior in high school. Her dream is to go to law
school, and she informed me that she is not ever going to have a boyfriend until
she graduates from law school so she can focus completely on school. She spends
most of her free time after school studying. So how is she planning on paying
for law school? She has a little store set up at the school she goes to, where
she pays other students $10 a month to help her run it between classes and she
sells snacks like mangos for $0.12 each, and waters, chocolate milks, Ramen
noodles, and other little treats that the kids can buy between classes. I don’t
know when she started the school store, but it is a very cool little business
she has going. Obviously it will take her a very long time to come up with the
money that she needs for law school, but I think it is so awesome to see a kid
who is so driven. She knows what she wants to do, and she is doing absolutely
everything in her own power to make it happen. And she will quickly tell you
that the most important thing she does to achieving her dream is pray. She will
be one of the few people in this country that can overcome being born poor and
do something amazing with her life.
