Last week Lisa and I MCed the VBS at Horizon Church. Thankfully that meant speaking in English, so I didn’t have to think so hard when trying to crack jokes with the kids. We led music/ dance time and also got to bounce around to the variety of activities in the day. The kids kept coming back with more excitement and energy. It was a treat to see them get fired up about what they were learning and the games they played. I defiantly needed coffee to keep up with their kid-ongoing-playful-energy. And I found out that if I’m not sure where to land next I can always be a Traveling VBS MC. (This of course is a joke, as my dancing worked but that was due to my animated face not because of my remembering the dance moves) Lisa and I are relieved to have the stage time behind us… But those catchy songs remain to be catch phrases we use to crack a smile.

This week’s camp is a Junior Lifegaurd course for the teens of Casafe. It’s been so fun to see the teens embrace and enjoy the opportunity. On day one, when they put on their tanks they lit up! It was as if they took on this responsibility, ownership and excitement that was awaiting them on accomplishing the course. Each day is started with coffee and bread and a devotional and then it’s handed over to the local lifeguard to put them to work. The teens have worked hard and after lots of physical exercises they were excited to put rescue techniques to practice. They’ve been encouraging one another well and have taken great ownership in this new endeavor. Snack, water and lunch breaks are filled with great laughter and more bonding. We’ve had tremendous support from the church on putting this on so on Sunday at church the teens will given their certificates as they share what they’ve learned this week.

It’s been a bonus that a WorldRace team is here in Jaco! The same host I had is hosting a team of 6 girls on their first month. I’ve been excited envisioning all that’s ahead for them and reflecting on the many memories of month one! They’re great, reminding me of fresh enthusiasm and hearts ready to embrace new opportunity!

I continue to adjust to life in Costa Rica. My Spanish is improving… Little by little. And I’m slowly but surely adjusting to the Tico timetable and hospitality. Meaning things like start times are quite flexible and when someone brings bread you better put on coffee!

Well, off to see if I can catch more of Spanish lifeguard phrases, like “RCP” or in English, CPR!
