Shortly after I graduated with my Masters degree in social work in 2015, I was lead to the World Race website and have been dreaming and scheming ever since. On January 3rd, 2019 I will give my final hugs and throw my 50-pound pack on my back and begin my World Race. From January through November of next year, I will be serving in 11 countries: Honduras, Costa Rica, Panama, Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Botswana, Swaziland, Lesotho, and South Africa.
This isn’t the Amazing Race, and it isn’t a vacation. My team and I will be living out of backpacks and sleeping in tents as we love the people of these countries through prayer, evangelism, and service. While I’ve been a social worker here in the United States I’ve been grateful for the opportunity to speak life into people who aren’t always seen or heard. Now, I’m excited to do the same for my teammates and the people in these 11 countries.
From 1980-83, my mom and dad served as medical missionaries in Swaziland. I am in awe that I have the chance to serve the same people that my parents loved and cared for 30 years ago. I’m also looking forward to spending time with different cultures and seeing the way that people experience and worship God. It’s easy for me to put God in a white, English-speaking box because that is who I am and what I’m familiar with. I’m so eager to see how God transforms my understanding of who He is.
