Emotions going into training camp: nervousness, uncertainty and unease.
Emotions post-training: joy, excitement and pure, awestruck wonder.
Just outside of Gainsville, GA, training camp was 10 days of getting to know my new family, camping out in tents and “airports”, eating new foods in new ways and growing in deep intimacy with the Father.
Meet the I Squad
In just 10 days, these 27 strangers became my new community. To say I’m stoked to start the World Race with this body of believers is an understatement.
I feel semi-crazy for saying that training camp was the most impactful and transformative experience I’ve ever had. Yet, I say it’s true.
I was like a gutter that hadn’t been cleaned out in years, collecting the same dead leaves season after season. I complacently lived with burdens and struggles I accepted as “normal,” not letting the Lord climb up on his ladder and take them out. He gutted me and filled me with the presence I had been yearning for but wasn’t making room for.
2 Corinthians 5:17 became truly alive: “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”
I’ve been following Jesus since I was 10, and the “lightbulb” moment that I am a new creation finally went off.
My old self was put to death on the cross, and now I’m walking new.
So if training camp was just a glimpse, I can’t begin to fathom what the Race has in store.
