I have now been in Siem Riep for over a day and have come to several conclusions while I have been here.
1. Similar to my first experience here, I am shocked by the number of white people I see. You have to realize that I have just come out of two months of hardly seeing any white people and now I see hundreds of them and all I can do is stare. I can really relate to when the natives stare at us….I really want to say to them “hello, where you from?” but I do not think that would go over well.
2. Siem Riep is the land of all things comfy. Soft, comfy beds, chairs and couches! My rear end is very appreciative of this as I’ve only been able to sit on a wooden floor, wooden chair, or the occasional plastic yard chair. It’s been a rough time on my tukus.
3. Coffee is dirt cheap here…about 1.50 for a latte. Of course, drinks also only come in one size but I’ll take what I can get. I will go poor from the coffee here I think.
4. There is a lot of really good food here! Tons of variety including Mexican, American, khmer (go figure) and more.
5. Getting your feet cleaned by hundreds of little fish is not a fun thing, especially if you have really ticklish feet (and anyone at Sandys’ would know that I do). Also, all the calluses that I have worked hard on over the years are now gone and I am sad…I really appreciated them and should have thought about that before I put my feet in the fish infested pond. Let’s hope I do not get any blisters next month.
6. Beds are wonderful; I can sprawl out when I sleep.
7. I love flushing western toilets!
8. Apparently white people enjoy taking random pictures of white people.
9. There are still insects in the city…including in your room in the guesthouse and like to bite you white you sleep.
10. Time goes by too quickly while you are in debrief.
11. And one last note…I am glad that I am not the only person who smells because the guy who just sat next to me on the couch in ‘Blue Pumpkin’ smells as well….hope he isn’t reading my computer.
