I wake up to the dull sound of a engine outside the gates. As I climb the stairs to the roof for my morning devotions, the banging of hammers echoes with each step. I try to worship… but all I hear are the shouts from the construction workers below.

While eating breakfast, I forget about the noises. It’s not gone, I’m just distracted. Enjoyment of my friends and food pulls my attention away from the noises and into the present moment.

Later, with no explanation, I suddenly notice the bangs and motors again. “What are they doing over there?!?!” I exclaim to my teammates. This is how most of my day goes. Hearing it a little, then it becomes overwhelming and annoying, but inevitably, the sounds fade into the background and I proceed with my day.

God showed me an important lesson surrounding this experience. Here’s what I heard Him say,

“This is what it’s like as I shape and build you. Sometimes you recognize the changes and are content to let it happen. It’s not bothering you. Sometimes the noise and construction becomes so loud you get angry. Too much all at once. Then there are other times when the work becomes so constant in your life that it develops into background noise. My work never stops, only your reaction to it. Someday you will go outside and think ‘Oh cool! Thats what He was building! I understand now.’ You will be grateful for the work I have done. You will see what I wanted to build all along.”
