This month my team and I are working at a Senior Center here in El Quiche. What I assume most people see when they walk in are a group of old people who seem helpless. That isn’t what I see. I see beauty, character, workers, passion, and love. I see wrinkled hands that have been through more than I can imagine. Talking to them for anytime at all you will see their youthful spirits shine right through their faces. They are so young at heart and they make that so evident.
Two men who always seem to stick out to me are Oscar and Francisco. Thinking back to what Oscar must have been like as teenager, I could see a prankster. He plays jokes on people all day. Whenever I look at him he is laughing or joking around with someone. Then there’s Francisco, he is a sweetheart. He is so small but has the biggest heart. He gets so excited with any activity we are doing. He goes all in and always enjoys his time.
There is so much wisdom to be offered from these people. I believe they have lived out their lives. I catch myself just looking into their eyes and pondering what they have been through. What struggles have they faced? What triumphs and failures have they endured?
I want their stories to be told. I want people to know about their lives. Each of them have a story worth telling and I want them to believe that. This is my hope for the rest of the month. I want to give them a voice.
I have been so inspired this month. I have had the opportunity to look at faith in a whole new light. These people rely on our Father for everything. Some have been abandoned by family and don’t have a home to call their own.
We are so quick to try and figure out things for ourselves when we need to stop, lay ourselves down and look to the Lord. It sounds so simply and yet is something that we hardly do.
I encourage each of you to start seeing the Lord as the Father that he is. He wants to take care of you. He wants the best for you. There is so much love that he wants to pour over you, it is time to receive it.
