All over Asia we would see shirts that would say, “Same Same” on the front and “but Different” on the back. We would hear this phrase in houses we would visit and conversations at the local 7-11.  For 3 months I heard this phrase. I can figure the meaning of this simple phrase to mean many things. This was the response to many questions or even the reason behind the differences between America and _______ (blank) Asian country. We are the same…but different. You can ask for an item at the market and they come with something that is the same…but different.

How is it that I can finally put a real life application to this phrase now in Africa?

In a nightly team time, Ken, our team leader, had made a comment that the girls on Team Gateway have lots in common but we are each uniquely different.

The light in my head turned on. We are “SAME SAME BUT DIFFERENT”.

The three girls on Team Gateway have been together since Day 1 of the World Race. I have served, loved, lived, and talked with these 2 other women for 180 days and counting. I have been so blessed to live in 6 different countries with these women of God. I have spoken different languages, eaten different foods, used different potties, slept in different rooms, and served different ministries with these women. We have been under different team names and we have gone through the ups and downs of the race together.

In the midst of me being half way through the race I have realized I have never introduced you to the people I have served with around the world. I want to tell you about these wonderful women that I can identify so many “same same” characteristics with, yet learn from their differences.

Let me tell me how we are “same same but different”.

Jaclyn

Jaclyn is from Michigan and has a degree in journalism. Jaclyn is talented at photography and has been a beacon of wisdom for our team in regards to God’s voice. Jaclyn brings kingdom to earth in her actions and her words. She is wise beyond her years and speaks from a depth that not many even know exists. Jaclyn’s ability to keep the peace as well as cast guidance on situations has been an asset to our team.  Jaclyn sees the world through the lens of an artist always looking to see how she can bring glory to the Lord.

Jaclyn has taught me to speak with boldness and to seek out the Lord’s voice. She has taught me to desire the Word of the Lord in ways I never have before.

Alyssa

Alyssa is from New York and graduated with a degree in Social Work. Alyssa has compassion and a heart for children like no one else I know. Alyssa sees the least of these through God’s eyes. Alyssa has shown our team what a passion for Christ’s children looks like. She has delighted in small moments and succeeded in great moments. Alyssa’s willingness to serve selflessly is an example for believers all over the world and has been huge for our team. Her gentleness is comforting and her quiet boldness is inspiring. Alyssa’s heartbeat has added rhythm to God’s masterpiece being made around the World.

Alyssa has taught me to exude patience and compassion on everyone. She has taught me to live out a selfless life every day in all areas of my life. She has taught me to see the world through God’s love.

These women…
Challenge me
Laugh with me
Grow by me
Cry with me
Serve alongside me
Sleep near me
And are loved by me!

Let me not forget our last team member. We also have another teammate- our team leader.

Ken

Ken is from Texas and graduated with a degree in something like Biology…sorry I am not 100% on that one. Ken brings balance and encouragement to our team which has made us what we are today. He speaks life when words are needed and listens through the silence. Ken is in tune to the team’s pace as well as our personal journeys. Ken lead’s with his heart and his mind in a perfect steadiness that allows the Lord’s to work in all areas of our team. Ken’s vulnerability and openness has brought breakthroughs to our team allowing for huge growth. Ken has a passion for logics yet strives for the unknown even when he doesn’t know it. 😉

Ken has taught me to be love unconditionally and to open my heart to those around me. He has taught me to embrace differences while stand confident in whom I was created to be.
