During our month of Malaysia, we got the opportunity to be Preschool and Kindergarten Teachers for the month. Despite that idea TERRIFYING me at first, it turned out to be my favorite month so far!

I got to assist in teaching one of the 5 year old classes at the Kindergarten. My month was filled with beginner sight reading, basic addition, and living and non-living things. All of which was interspersed with plenty of snack times, runny noses, dance parties, arts and crafts, bathroom trips, play time, competitions of who can finish their water bottles first, breaking up fist fights, cleaning up spilled chocolate milk (I now completely understand “don’t cry over….”. It’s a real thing in Kindergarten.), and more smiles, laughs, hugs and kisses than this new teacher’s heart could handle.

At the time of writing this blog, I have only been gone from that small school in that small town in Malaysia for only a few days, but my heart already has a big gap. I learned so much from those 11 little rascals and their sweet teacher.

  • They taught me that things don’t always go as you planned. And it’s ok.
  • They taught me that messy can be beautiful.
  • They taught me that I have instincts in a classroom that I never knew existed.
  • They taught me that kids don’t have to know where you came from, or who you used to be. All they care about is that their teacher is there and they are loved and cared for.
  • They taught me that I CAN be a teacher, and it isn’t something that I have to be so scared of.
  • They taught me to love, and be loved in return.
  • They taught me that life as a kindergarten teacher is pretty fabulous, and it’s something that I want to do for longer than 1 short month!

Kindergarten Life. Sight Words, Snack Times, Craft Times, Math Times… all the good times. I can’t wait till this is my life. 🙂
