2 weeks ago I spent a week at a camp on top of a mountain with 100 or so students from CA. Here are 11 lessons -some fun, some serious- I learned from my week quite literally “on the mountain-top”:

  1. Jr High Girls are just as catty, if not more than when I was in Jr High
  2. I AM able to haul a pack -full to the max- up a mountain.. I may not breathe well afterwards, and I may not break  records, but PTL I can do it!
  3. I can survive working/playing in 100+ degree heat and sunlight
  4. Jr High girls have an AMAZING capacity for love and hope
  5. 1 6oz spray bottle of sunscreen, when used properly for Kat to not look like a lobster, will last about 3 days.
  6. When God calls me to minister, He is and will be working. Even when it feels like I’m not doing any good.
  7. It is possible to drink 24oz of liquid in 15 minutes… and still be thirsty
  8. Just because somebody acts like they aren’t “getting it” doesn’t mean that God isn’t working in them. He is just doing it differently than other people who are showing it more obviously.
  9. Despite previous High School age dreams, I would make a TERRIBLE head-banger
  10. Bugs and Jr High girls don’t mix. Period. “oh my gawwwsh, the moth blinked at me!!!” …At all…
  11. God is faithful, and He will continue to work on the things he started in me. He won’t quit until He finishes and I am complete in Him.

And just for fun, here are 11 Tips to Be the Best Counselor Ever:

  1. Be prepared for drama
  2. Drink water like its your favorite starfrappacappuextrafoamalatte
  3. Bring 3x as much sunscreen as you think you will need
  4. Be prepared to share just about everything .. Your sunglasses, your water bottle, your towel, your baby wipes, your band aids, your bed, your money, your story, your heart… Everything ..
  5. Have lots of patience
  6. Praise God with all your heart. Dance, clap, jump around, raise your hands. Your kids are watching you, and if they see you let loose praising God they will want to too!
  7. Pray Hard
  8. Act Crazy.. This is your chance to show your outrageous side, that crazy side of you that has been repressed since you were a jr higher!
  9. Love well
  10. Resist the temptation to hang out with only students and leaders from your church. Get to know people from other churches. We are all children of God, enjoy the family reunion!
  11. HAVE FUN!!
