I’m about to embark on a great adventure. Those countries up there? I’m going! A month in each place. I leave in four weeks.
I’m going on this crazy trip called the World Race. It’s run by an organization called Adventures in Missions. Since 1989, they’ve sent over 80,000 people into the mission field – some for as little as a week and some for a year or longer.
My trip will be just under a year and I’ll be traveling with a team of about 50 people in their 20s & early-30s. We’ll be carrying everything we need for the year on our backs, living on a limited budget, and sleeping on the ground. We’ll spend a month in each country, joining organizations and missionaries already in place and helping to fill the needs of the area. Every day on the World Race will be different – some days I’ll be doing construction, working with the sick in hospitals, teaching English, or playing with orphans.
Can you believe it? Me, living out of a backpack for a year. Me, sleeping on the ground for a year. Me, giving up my life in Washington, DC and traipsing around the world – for a YEAR. (If you speak with my mother, please don’t remind her of this fact.)
It sounds absolutely crazy, doesn’t it? Yeah, I think so too….
But, here’s the thing: I have a heart for people – the broken, the beaten down, the abused. I have a desire to see the least among us lifted up, to see justice reign, and to see the love and power of Jesus spread throughout the nations.
Quite honestly, I can no longer sit here, a mile from Washington, DC, and not do something. I can no longer accept the injustices in the world without dedicating part of my life to somehow change things – even if it’s just the life of one orphan, one drug addict, one homeless man. The world can and will be transformed through tangible expressions of God’s love – and I want to be a part of that.
For a year, I’m giving up my life. For a year, I’m going to live among the hurting, the sick, the neglected. For a year, I’m going to put myself second – and everyone else first.
I would be blessed and honored if you would partner with me to help me make this trip. And when you do, please know that every dying man’s hand that I hold, every orphan that I make smile and every new school that I help build will be because of you – and you’ll be right there with me. You will be changing the world.
