“So… I found this mission trip online where you travel to 11 countries in 11 months, and it’s $15,500, and I’m gonna do it sometime.”
That was how I first introduced the race to my mom. She laughed a little and just replied with a sarcastic, “ohhh kayyy…” I told my mom about the race during my freshman year of college and had planned to go after graduating, but God had other plans and two years later told me it was time.
So, two years later, my next conversation was, “So mom, remember that World Race thing I told you about? Well… I applied…”
After that, everything was a whirlwind of emotion! But after a little cautious speculation my mom was completely on board with the Race. When you’re entering the mission field for the first time, it’s kind of terrifying to talk to your parents about. You know what God has put in your heart and there’s no denying your calling, but you also want to honor your parents! So the big fear becomes whether or not you will have their support.
I have experienced so many blessings on the race, but one of the biggest has been the support of my mom and the deep growth of our relationship through the Race. As I left on my journey, she also began a journey of parenting a missionary and all the worry and fear that comes with it! But through our faith, God has blessed both of us and allowed us to become even closer.
So for Mother’s Day, I am even more thankful for the support of my mom. Her prayers, her faith in me, and her faith in God are a great source of strength as I am away from home. I love you mom! And I can’t wait to see you in 2 months!
Happy Mother’s Day
