WOW! Indescribable, awed, amazed, overwhelmed, sad, happy, mixed, no words…these are some of the feelings and thoughts I had as we were leaving the English camp we lead on Friday. It took place in a smaller villiage about an hour away. As were driving there, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I knew I was going to be teaching students English, but questions ran through my head; how many would be there, would they know much English, had they had ‘westerners’ around before? Did they know God? What was my roll going to be? How would I love these kids? How old would they be? How could I impact their lives for Christ?
We started off leading the whole group in songs with motions just to get them involved and excited and learning simple English words. As the time went on, each of us split into our own group to teach a different part of English. I got to ask each of them their names, which was exciting making sure they knew I cared about each different person. I had the opportunity to teach shapes and colors to seven different groups of kids. It was neat to see the light bulb click in their head as they grasped the concept of different shapes and colors in English. I had them repeat after me and then try to match the words up with the shape or color. Afterwards they all wanted me to write my name and e-mail or phone number down. I was able to write “Jesus loves you!” along with my name praying that as they learned English they will also learn to grasp the concept of who Jesus is.
At lunch the Thai teachers treated us like royalty! All Thai people seem to treat us the same way everywhere we go. They made us an extravagant Thai lunch (with less spice for us Americans who can’t handle it quite as well).
They all wanted our autographs afterwards and pictures as well. I spent as much time as I could with each but it was hard being that there were so many. Looking into each one of their eyes made my heart melt. I wanted to find out each of their stories and pour into them. I pray that a smile and name will bring joy to them and as they learn English, I pray that they will understand and know that Jesus truly does love them.
