When we arrived in the DR on Saturday, we asked about showing tattoos since I have several visible tattoos and so does Liz.  Pastor Raul said it was okay to show them, but in their culture tattoos are bad; the only people who have tattoos are pro-athletes, singers, rappers, other famous people, and people who do not believe in God.  Clearly, I am none of the above!

Today, while we were playing with the kids at school, a little boy looked at my tattoos then asked me when I was introduced to the Bible (at least that what I think he said).  Unfortunately, I wasn't able to answer his question since I don't speak Spanish and there was no translator around.  In that moment, I wished I wasn't tatted-up.  I wasn't able to explain that although I have tattoos, I am a believer and each of my tattoos have biblical meaning.

Part of our ministry while in Azua, DR has been visiting local schools to share about the Bible, since September is the month of the Bible.  We've been stressing the importance of reading the Bible daily, how it has impacted our lives, favorite verses, and other fun facts about the Bible.

Today we visited a high school.  Nearly every single high-schooler observed my tattoos.  Liz and I were working together, along with our Pastor Raul, who would translate what we said.  Liz wore long sleeves to cover her tattoo; I didn't cover any of the three tattoos I have.

Liz talked about September being the month of the Bible and encouraged them to read their Bibles daily.  She shared about God creating us, how he knows everything about us, and wants a relationship with each and everyone of us.  As we read the Bible, God will turn us into the people he created us to be, and will begin to reveal the plans he has for our lives.

Then I shared.  I said that one of my favorite verses is Romans 8:28 "For God causes all things to work together for the good of those who love him."  For much of my life I've done what I wanted to do, without consulting God or the Bible.  When I began reading the Bible, I learned that God has good plans for my life despite the choices I've make in the past.  He will even use all my past mistakes and sins for good according to his will.

I believe that God will use me and my testimony for his glory.  He will use me and my tattoos to showcase his love.  God has a record of using the most unlikely and least qualified people to do his work.  I'm a perfect example of that.  I hope that through my testimony the student were able to see that God can use them too, no matter what they've done in the past or what they are currently doing.  I pray that the Lord will work it all about for good – that the kids were able to see past my tattoos and hear my heart.  I believe God will touch each student's heart that I spoke to today, his love for them will be revealed.
