We drive on a dirt road one minute and an asphalt paved road filled with pot holes the other. We literally swerve from one side of the road to the other attempting to avoid them. It’s like playing a video game and trying to get bonus points if you hit the coins, in this case we win a less bumpy drive if we bypass them. It’s like me playing Mario Cart on the Wii, swerving everywhere. 🙂
Off in the distance on the horizon the sun sinks into the African plains. Hills add detail and more dimension to this view. Green grass filled pastures are picturesque. Acres of land are turned over, as it is planting season. The red dirt you hear about in Africa is quite predominate. I personally think it is more of a burnt orangeish-red. Don’t think fire truck red or you will be disappointed. Lantana bushes line the road home. We drive through little towns and villages dropping off passengers and accumulating more. Storefronts and local shops are painted with their name, exactly for what it is Chemist, Restaurant, Food, Hardware etc. From Cell phone to Coke-a-cola to Pampers, there are always random advertisements painted on buildings.
Women sell there produce off of tarps and little wooden tables. Taxis consist of vans and motorbikes. Before taking the ride make sure you have a set price. Being white, a mzungu, they will increase the fare by double or triple the price. Then you’re ready, hop on and go. It makes me want to own one. The wind in your hair and the open road!
On our drive to Nairobi for debrief, we saw zebras, antelope, gazelle, armadillos, baboons and wildebeests. Everyday I feel so blessed, it’s like I’m living a dream. I have to pinch myself an remember this is my life. A taste of something new every time I turn around and face another day.Â
See you soon!
