Last month, we were working with Ciudad Refugio and a large part of that foundation’s work is helping drug addicts recover and find Jesus. We got to hear some of their stories and we learned a little bit about addictions and the process of recovery. Now, after being away for two weeks, a thought occurred to me. What if we were addicted to Jesus? What if we would give up everything: our families, our friends, our homes, even food just to spend a few hours with Jesus? What if we went through withdrawals when we stopped praying or stopped entering into His presence? How different would your life look if you were addicted to Jesus?

The Bible tells us time and time again to give up everything of this world. It challenges us to put our faith in nothing but the Lord. It reminds us that if we truly trust the Father, we don’t need to control and plan every detail of our lives.

Jesus said to him, ‘If you wish to be perfect, go, sell your possessions, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.’” Matthew 19:21

‘Whoever comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and even life itself, cannot be my disciple.'” Luke 14:26

God isn’t saying you should hate your mother and father but that your love for Him should be so strong that you don’t need anything else to sustain you. He tells us that if there comes a day when we must choose between Him and our earthly relationships, we must be willing to give up even the love of our families to follow Him.

Drugs are powerful but God’s love is even more powerful. We met many people last month who told us they believed in God but the drugs were just too strong. That’s not true. There is nothing the Lord cannot do and there is nothing we can do to make Him stop loving us.

I want to be so in love with the Lord and let Him have such a hold in my life that I can’t stand to be apart from Him. I laughed to myself here because the song “Your Love is my Drug” by Kesha popped into my head. God’s love is my drug. It is stronger than any force of man or any substance. Even though I know I will fall short of His expectations, I want to earnestly seek Him every day above all else.

I want to be addicted to Jesus.
