If you haven’t read my blog “God Things,” I would high to recommend doing so before reading this blog (click here to read) because this was a HUGE God thing.

I never thought I would run into anyone I knew while on the World Race. I had never been to any of the countries on our route before and didn’t know anyone currently living in any of the 11. I didn’t have any friends conveniently studying abroad at the same time or anything like that.

Rewind 7 years

As I was leaving Germany, I knew that the realistic odds of ever seeing my homestay family again were slim- probably one in a million.

Now back to a few days ago

I saw on Facebook that Martin, the older brother from my homestay family was in Da Lat, Vietnam of all places! I thought maybe I would message him and ask about cool things to do in Da Lat but decided against it because I figured he probably didn’t even know who I was anymore.

Then yesterday, as we were walking down the street after dinner in Ho Chi Minh, a group of backpackers was walking towards. I looked up at one guy in a particular as they passed and thought wait… I started to tell Paxtyn, “I think that was…” And then I heard “Kaitlyn?” Lo and behold, standing right there in front of me was none other than Martin. I hadn’t seen him in 7 years after meeting in Germany and we ran into each other in Vietnam. Neither of us could believe what just happened.

We went to a market together and caught up a bit- a lot has happened in both of our lives since 2010 after all. We didn’t have much time as my team was heading to Da Lat in a few hours and Martin and his friends were only in Ho Chi Minh for the night. I kept playing the scenario over and over again in my head about how ridiculously unlikely our meeting was. What if I hadn’t gone with Erika, David, and Paxtyn to get smoothies after dinner? What if I hadn’t gone to dinner with that group at all? What if we had been walking on the other side of the street?

So many tiny little details had to fall into place for this reunion to happen- it was truly a one in a million occurrence. But then I started thinking, was it really up to chance? You see, often times, things that seem so unlikely or improbable that happen don’t happen by chance.

These things happen by God. He is our creator and the ultimate architect of our lives. When I think about the power of goodness of the Lord, should I really be surprised that He would give me this sweet reunion? The answer is no. This was just another God thing to add to my list of incredible wonders and blessings. Our God is so good and I can’t wait to see how he continues to leave me in awe on this journey and for the rest of my life.
