How To Keep Safe in a Johannesburg Bus Station: Featuring Team Xuberant Joy
Let me just throw out a little scenario for ya.
“You’re leaving Port Elizabeth, South Africa, and trying to get to Nelpruit, South Africa. You and your team shortly discover that the only way to get there is by taking a 16 hour bus ride from Port Elizabeth to Johannesburg, waiting 14 hours in the bus station, and then taking another 5 hours bus ride to Nelpruit, and finally arriving at 3:00 in the morning!”
I don’t know many people that would be excited about this. We were all a little worried how we were going to sit in the Joburg bus station, out of the way, without drawing attention to ourselves, and be safe at the same time. I mean come on, 6 girls with packs as big as them on their backs, and another dangling off the front…. Nope, that doesnt screa, tourist or anything. Nevertheless, we did what we had to do and got on our 5;30 bus from P.E. to Joburg.
SIXTEEN HOURS LATER…
“Hopped off the bus at JBS with a dream in my heart again”.. just kidding 😉 I won’t sing you the Miley Cyrus song, but I will tell you that I wasn’t looking forward to the next 14 hours at that place. We all gathered around somewhat out of the way and tried to come up with a plan.
We decided that we would get breakfast at the KFc right outside the bus station. (Yes, KFC here has breakfast!!) It was about 8:30 am and we had only had a PB sandwich. Once we swallowed our food whole (that’s another joke), we found this CUTE little lounge area right inside, with a couch, and 4 chairs. 6 seats total, 6 girls total. PERFECT. We then found that KFC had FREE WIFI! That is a music to the ears of world racers. So we plopped down our packs on one side of the room, and had plenty of space to move around and be comfortable. So naturally, we made ourselves at home. Why not, it was out of the way, safe, and there was food. BINGO.
12 hours later, still in the KFC we had eating breakfast and lunch there, had several smoothie type drinks, and write the employees a little note for letting us stay there so long. We then decided to make our way into the bus station before it got too dark, and eat somewhere new for dinner. We found that the bus station had barely anybody in it, and there were still a few restaurants open! BOOM. We ate dinner, and the remaining two hours went by so quickly! We boarded the bus, to Nelspruit, safe and sound! There is no doubt in my mind that God prepared that place for us in KFC. No matter how goofy the place, He knew we needed a safe secure place to stay and He provided!
All my love,Kait 🙂
