I was in a funk.
There are some days that I’m just not feeling up to what I’m doing. Life on the field isn’t always glamorous.
Shocker.
There are times when ministry consists of weeding, picking up trash, or figuring out how to do be creative with limited supplies. This was just one of those days where by lunch I was exhausted spiritually, mentally, and physically. I had no idea how I was going to survive the afternoon.
I ended up pulling aside two of my teammates to pray over me. Prayer is so powerful. In that prayer, they prayed for God to give me a golden nugget that afternoon. I was intrigued to see God provide. Of course it wasn’t in the way I expected. Another shocker.
That afternoon we wrangled up supplies from the depot, which consisted of scrap wood, wire, wire clippers, two hammers, some nails, a shovel, and a ladder. We drove to the Kids Club in Source Matelas (pronounced Sus Matla) and when we arrived, we found out that they hadn’t had Kids Club for the past two weeks because their site wasn’t safe for the children.
I was floored when I found out that they have on average 150 children attending every single week. Each week they taught their kids about Jesus.
This wasn’t happening at the moment though, because a storm took out their roof and their benches. And by roof I mean some palm fronds that were woven together 6 months ago that were completely rotted through.
It was our job to help do repairs so that Kids Club could happen the next day.
For the next two hours, we jimmied and macgyvered as best we could to make it safe and sound. I looked at it as extreme fort building rather than construction because construction wasn’t the right word for what we were doing. I didn’t have much background in construction, but I knew a thing or two about fort building. It turned out to be awesome. And not many construction sites have live accappella worship music encouraging our team onwards.
The next day we were able to attend Kids Club.
I was blown away.
We arrived to see over 100 kids sitting on benches, saying scripture verses, playing games, and having a grand ‘ole time. My heart was overflowing with love and joy. We got to introduce ourselves, sing a song, and just be with them.
It was incredible to think that because we spent a couple hours doing some tedious work, all this could come to fruition. It was truly humbling.
Back in Hawaii I was a part of Collide, our Youth Ministry at C4. Kids always have a special place in my heart, and to know that I was able to do something that I loved to do back home was uplifting. It made me miss my kids, but I was happy to have pushed through and see God blow me away.
Sometimes, ministry doesn’t always look like us playing soccer (seriously my favorite!!!), or holding babies, or doing something glamorous, but every type of ministry is important and worthwhile. I’ve been learning some humbling lessons in weeding, painting a basketball court, construction (in this case, extreme fort building!), and the list goes on.
I’m thankful for all the ministries I’ve been a part of this month. I’ve learned how important each type of ministry is for furthering His kingdom.
Praise the Lamb!
