Being in South Africa has been a whirlwind of an experience. I’m not even sure where to begin. People at training camp told us that we would have so much free time to gather our thoughts, learn new talents, and be with the Lord. I have yet to see any free time! The crazy part is that I feel more at peace with myself and the Lord than I ever have. This is the first blog I’ve been able to write since arriving in Jeffrey’s Bay, and our time is almost done here.

I feel as though God placed me here on purpose. I think about why I waited so long to come on the race when I knew I wanted to do it years ago. The reason is simple: God’s timing. For the past two weeks Tribe of Judah has had the absolute pleasure of working at an after-school program called Beats and Books. This program is designed for neighborhood kids to come, worship, and learn each day after school. During the two hours that we get them, the kids work on homework, learn new songs, and practice their spelling. But it’s so much more than that. Beats and Books offers a safe place for these kids to be the children God created them to be.

When I left home, I thought that I had left teaching behind me for the year—that I was taking a “gap year” of sorts. However, God’s timing is everything. There is a girl at Beats and Books (she will remain nameless). This beautiful young lady is so smart and kind. In the states, she would be receiving special services at her school; however, here, those special services are not available. One of my teammates and I, who are familiar in working with these services, were able to join forces and create some tools that will hopefully better her abilities to be independently successful. It was so amazing! Not only that, my teammate and I were able to go to this sweet girl’s school, meet her teacher, and discuss future plans. I was so ecstatic! Getting to experience the way school systems work in another country was so eye-opening! Her teacher was so receptive to us and willing to put in the extra steps to help her. Her teacher explained to us that the public schools in South Africa do not offer Special Education; he himself has a degree in the subject. Their class sizes are 40-50 learners, and the teachers are so over-worked. I thought the States’ educational system was sometimes lacking.

After speaking with her teacher, my teammate and I were then able to meet with her Aunt to introduce ourselves and discuss her beautiful niece. I cannot explain the joy in my heart when this little girl showed up that afternoon, so willing and happy to do her homework because she knew in her heart that there are people out there who care tremendously for her. God’s timing is so perfect. Had I not taught for the last 5 years, there’s no way I would’ve been able to help this little girl grow. I now know why I am here at this time—because God intended it all along.

I am sad to say that yesterday was our last day at Beats and Books. The things they are doing there are so incredibly special, and I know these children’s lives will forever be impacted. God is always at work there. I thank Him for allowing me the opportunity to be with those wonderful humans. Until next time, Beats and Books.
