The World Race is not glamorous.
And I don’t say that because it’s dirty.
Honestly, I haven’t been that dirty.
I say that because you need to know it’s ordinary.

You have many days that are just regular old days.
You get to choose how you spend them.
Just like you do at home.
You can still choose to watch movies all day.
Or listen to music.
Or go sightseeing.
Or sleep in.
Or be with people.
Or be alone.
You get to choose.

You are sometimes at ministries that feel more like a job.
You may even work 9-5:00.
You won’t always like what you’re doing.
You won’t always like who you’re working with or for.

Now…

There are some differences.
You do have to meet with a group of people each day that express a desire to follow the Lord.
And there are many days you won’t want to.
You could also be in a country where you don't understand much of what is said outside that group of people.
But that's not as big of a deal as one would think.

I’m writing this because you need to know.
You need to know that wherever you are, you have to choose.
Choose to find Him in the ordinary.

I could do this Race and never change.
I could.
And you could do yours.
I could sit through team time after team time and refuse to heed the instruction or feedback I’ve been given.
Just as I could sit through church service after church service and bible study after bible study at home and refuse to budge.
I could.

I could treat each ministry like a job…and I could get it over with.
Just as I could at a job at home.

I could take every free day and spend it on myself.
I could sleep in til noon and never talk to a soul.
Just like I could at home.

I could avoid the Lord, His Word, His call…just as easily on the Race as I could at home.
And no one would even notice.
Because I know the right things to say.
Because no one says anything about how one spends their free day.
Because no one will really notice if I just ‘get through’ as long as I smile every now and then, and assure them that I'm 'processing' things or 'pressing in'.

And no one will notice where you are either.
No one will notice or care how you spend your free day.
No one will blame you for just wanting to get through your job…because it’s just a job.
As long as you give the right answers after a church service or bible study…no one will really question or challenge where you’re at or what your other actions are.
No one will even notice.

But you…you notice.
And you know.
You know the call to something greater.
You know that there is something deeper than what’s in front of your eyes.
You know it's never 'just a job'.
You know what it is to survive…and you know you’ve been called to live.
You know that there’s a cost. But you know the cost is worth it.
And you know it’s real. And that the freedom that accompanies it is even more real.
You know your flesh could refuse the change necessary to step into the life you've longed to live.
But your heart is too desperate for it to let that happen.

And you know what?
You don’t need a different circumstance…and I don’t need a different month.
You don’t need more time…and I don’t need another free day.
You don’t need a new family…and I don’t need a new team.
You don’t need a new job…and I don’t need a new ministry.

We don't need to just start all over. We just need to move where we're at.
Right where we're at.

This day…this exact day:

  • I woke up.
  • I washed some dishes.
  • I had my coffee.
  • I journaled and read.
  • I got my list of things to do.
  • I washed some more dishes.
  • I had lunch.
  • And I'm about to do laundry.
  • And then I might run with some friends.

Does this make you smile?
It should.
Because this is a day on the Race.
This is a crazy, adventurous, living-the-dream day on the Race.
And the Lord is ALL OVER THIS DAY.

Look at your day.
It may not look much different than mine.
And the Lord is ALL OVER IT.
I promise He is.
So…join Him in it. smiley

Live YOUR race.
