Leaving South Africa, I was posed with the question of what I was going to leave behind. I went through my pack again, and tried to figure out if even physically I could unload something. Sometimes doing things physically can get me spiritually.
I went into Mozambique without my tent. We hadn't used it thus far, and I nearly curse having to pack it every month. I only keep it because maybe, just maybe, I'll have to use it one of these days. So I carry it…and curse it…for a 'just in case' moment.
We arrived in Maputo, Mozambique on Saturday night. Pastor Eduardo picked us up and drove us back to his home where we'd be staying.
To the yard that we would be sleeping in.
When we pulled up, some of his friends and sons were putting up a huge tent to hold about seven of us.
. Sigh. Of course they were.
So, we are tenting this month.
And I get to sleep in a tent provided by my Father. Too sweet.
We are tenting in the yard of Pastor Eduardo, his wife, Angelica, and their six children. Each day we wake up, and there is never a moment until sundown that it is just us and his family at the home. Neighbors and people from the church come in and out all day, helping Angelica with meals or laundry or just to visit.
His church is just down the road from his house. He's been in ministry for years now, and when asked what the biggest challenge is, he said: "Time. Having the time."
He serves in a community that can't afford to support him…so he has another job teaching at a bible school. Intermixed with all of this, he has Sunday morning service, Tuesday and Friday evening services, Tuesday home visits, Wednesday prayer and hospital visits, Thursday and Friday during the day he goes into his other church plant communities to serve, and Saturday, they have an all day youth event.
I say all this because we’re only able to serve with Pastor Eduardo and pour into this community through a campaign the World Race calls Unsung Heroes. He was found by a squad that came before my squad to this area just earlier this year, and now we get to be here to work with him this month.
Through July, my team is serving with two ministries. We are doing part-time with Pastor Eduardo and part-time with Unsung Heroes. Through Unsung Heroes we search for people that World Race can partner with, and in the future, send teams to serve with.
We are searching for people that have devoted their lives to achieving the vision the Lord has given them for their community. People that may need some encouragement and extra help that one of our teams could provide.
Even if we’re not able to partner with them, we just want to help them share their stories. Then perhaps someone else will feel the stirring to join them when we can’t.
If any of you know anyone in Mozambique that would fit this description, please send their information my way! You can click on the "Write Me!" button on the sidebar.
For more information on the details of Unsung Heroes, just click on any of my teammates’ blogs on the sidebar of my screen. They might explain an aspect of it better than I do!
As always, THANK-YOU!
