Sorry I haven’t updated my blog recently!   I’ll try to get everyone up to speed with a quick summary….

G’Day Mate…… I’m in AUSTRALIA! The ministry that we are partnered with is the Christian Outreach Centre. The Christian Outreach Centre is located in Darwin, Australia. Darwin is a small town located in the Northern Territory in Australia. It is one of the northern-most cities. Unlike southern Australia, the Northern Territory tends to be warmer and has wet and dry seasons.   Darwin was hit by a horrible cyclone years ago and had to be rebuilt, and thus is one of the newer cities in Australia.   Darwin is known for its friendly people, outdoor activities and CROCODILES.   Saltwater crocs apparently eat numerous people every year which is why you can’t swim in the ocean or most bodies of water! But anyway, back to more about our ministry…..

The Christian Outreach Centre of Darwin, or COC is run by Merv & Joie Westbrook.  They are a loving and hard-working couple that have been managing the centre for several years. The COC ‘s primary purpose is to provide temporary housing for indigenous (Aboriginal) people that are in town for hospital visits. The COC also provides people with meals and helps with transportation to and from the hospital. There is temporary housing and more permanent housing for those with permanent health problems. This is extremely helpful for the aboriginal people because most of them come from villages throughout the Northern Territory. In speaking with some of patients, they mention that they have taken flights most times in order to get to the hospital.

In addition to providing housing for those in need, the COC also has several other programs in order to generate funds. They run a furniture store and a farm in which they raise pigs and grow crops. These investments help the COC to be self-sufficient in hopes of being able to support other missions within the organization. In speaking with Pastor Merv, he mentioned that the COC supports roughly 5,000 missionaries around the world! Talk about being good stewards with God’s money!

That’s a brief summary of the organization that we’ve been working with. I’ll be soon posting a bit more about what I’ve been up to in the land down under. Check back soon!
