We are in Ecuador for the month of February, specifically south Quito. For the mostpart our ministry consists of working at a school which is affiliated with the local church. It is a private Christian school consisting of kindergarten to grade sevenand when translated it is called “Friends of Jesus School”. A big part of ministry is teaching English and helping the teachers out in any of their classes however they would like us to. School starts at seven and goes until one in the afternoon, and then after lunch there is always some sort of cleaning, construction or clean up project. The local contact here surprisingly had the whole month planned out before we even got here which is good, but there is not alot of free time and working with kids all the time gets pretty draining.
This month we are not staying in our tents, but rather each of us has been placed with a family from the church. This sometimes gets interesting considering they speak little to no English and I speak little to no Spanish, so it is challenging. They are super hospitable and caring and things always seem to work themselves out so its good, it forces me to learn more of the language as well. We have a curfew of 7:30 pm so um ya that takes some getting used to, its hard because we don’t have alot of freedom but we realize that it is for our own safety.
Last night I came home to find a dead Guinea Pig just hanging out in the sink on top of the dishes, apparently it is the national dish, so I have a good idea what will be for supper tonight! Goo! The food gets a little gnarly, like ‘sheep stomach soup’ which makes for good laughs, especially if it comes from some of the girls!
The weather is surprisingly cool overcast and rain everyday so far, so my tan is definitely lacking! The country is super beautiful, very lush, Quito is situated in the mountains so I am very much looking forward to the chance to do some sight-seeing as well.
Pray that we would do our best and be faithful in our ministry, as at times it is hard to see God working in it. However we trust that God is working here, and that if we remain faithful to it he will reward us with bigger things in the months ahead.
