So while we haven’t had alot of opportunities to get away from the school where we are working, last Saturday on our off day we were able to go to a local bull fight! It was by no means professional, but it was a great time nonetheless and it not being professional just made things that much more interesting. It started out with local guys in the arena with the bulls, well actually there was only one bull and a few cows. Either way the animals were not very happy, and they were bent on laying out anyone who didn’t get out of the way.
It was about this time that I somehow decided it would be a good idea for me to climb over the fence and try my luck at dodging the cows. I’m not sure why I wanted to, or why I thought it would be a good idea, but whatever the reason I climbed the fence and into the arena. It didn’t take long for me to get in on the action; taking off my red rain jacket I had been wearing and using it as a cape like the real Matadors. Before I really knew what was going on I realized the cow was charging right at me! Already having watched some of the other guys do it I figured it was best if I waited as long as possible before jumping out of the way at the last minute. So that is what I did, at the last second before I was about to get plowed I jumped out of the way and ran to my right, it all seemed good, until after jumping to the side I slipped and kind of half fell down. I don’t really remember much about what happened next except that I thought I had seen the cow turn and I was sure it was going to come back for a second charge. Scrambling to my feet I prepared myself for round two, but probably fortunately for me it never came. If ever someone falls or gets hit, other people usually get in the mix immediately to distract the bull, and that’s what had happened after they saw I had slipped.
Apparently the cow was super close and nearly flattened me, but I was just giving the crowd a good show by letting her get so close! Ha not really, I didn’t really know what was going on at the time, but it made for good times. A few guys did end up getting flattened which only added to the entertainment. If you ever get the chance to go see a bullfight I would definitely recomend it! There is a short video of it and some pictures I will try and put on facebook, if you haven’t already seen pictures of my trip go to facebook and check them out cuz its alot easier to put them on there than on my blog for some reason.
So that’s my bull fighting story, fortunately it went about as good as possible all things considered, and it’s something I won’t soon forget!
