All twenty of us crammed into one small red pickup and drove to some impoverished areas outside of Apestepeca. We’ve been piling a lot of people into really small vehicles. A short drive with us all hanging on the side of the pickup, we arrived at a small community built by some Canadians a few years ago. The houses are small and there are bits of trash scattered everywhere. We split into small groups and walked around praying for these homes.
Accompanied by our contact, Sarah, we entered a small house with a barb wire fence. The interior is a mess and none of us are really sure what to do. The language barrier can be frustrating at times. Dirty dishes are piling up in the corner. Sarah begins to sweep and tidy up and Hannah and I tackle the dish pile. I won’t lie, the dishes were pretty gross and the water we were using to clean them was disgusting. I’m still feeling my way through what life looks like on the race, but sometimes it’s as simple as doing dishes and sharing God’s love through action.
