While I was on the Race in 2008 I found Allan Wekesa, a 12-year old kid abandoned by his family, high as a kite on glue and completely desperate. He lived in the city dump and had to burn tires at night in order to not freeze to death. Police men had killed several of his friends by putting potato sacks over their heads and beating them to death. Even though there were 50 other kids living in the same dump, some much younger than Allan the Lord told me to take him and only him off the street. So, I did. (p.s. if you click on the dump link you will find a random broadcast that I found. Allan is in the footage and I pulled him out of this exact dump–crazy!)
Doing good is not easy. Confronting evil in the world takes sacrifice. A friend of mine was held at gunpoint while she was on a mission trip. She said many people around her were crying, some to the point of shaking in fear. She was a rock. The man held a gun straight to her head and all she could think was, "I'm already dead."
When I took Allan off the street I had to die. I died to my comfort, need for approval, doubt in God–all of that stuff that comes up when you attempt to move in faith for something. I thought I lived by faith before this moment, but when I became responsible for the life of a child I stepped into a new depth that I didn't know was there. The story ends with us finding a home for Allan at the very last minute possible called The Challenge Farm.
This will be our second trip to see him since we dropped him off. Every day when I clock out of my World Race job I put on my Challenge Farm hat and spend endless hours doing various funding projects to benefit my kiddos. So, while we will be gathering info for a few grants that I am writing for them, advocating for Allan and launching our new sponsorship program. Pray for us!!!
With that said I will be out of the office from March 31st-April 11th. If at all possible I need you guys to get a hold of me before next Wednesday with your questions. I will probably be posting a bunch of random stuff on here in attempts to answer your questions before you ask them–plus its just fun to overwhelm you and put 600 response messages in your inbox. It's not like you have anything going on anyway. 🙂
So I will leave you with a question to ponder–are you dead yet?
