“Do the math from divine perspective. Bill Johnson

i like numbers. i like them on houses, in stores, on pages
in a book, on the backs of
marathon runners, or on the side panel of dirtbikes racing through the
desert. numbers are awesome. that is…until they want to start doing crazy
things like multiplying and dividing. ew. this is where numbers and i go our
separate ways. at the intersection of “mathematics and “i’d rather do stuff i
understand.

i remember as a child sitting on the family room floor with
my dad doing multiplication flash cards. hated it. i remember taking those
timed tests in school that were 500 gazillion pages (front and back) of long
division. the only thing it measured was how dumb and slow i was. hated it.
then in college i took a statistics class (my sister swore it would be easier
than algebra…so not true) and i had to do the walk of shame as i turned in my
final exam, knowing i had failed. i actually turned it in crying. haha. hated
it.

mathematics and i don’t get along very well. i don’t
understand it, it doesn’t understand me. i keep it at arms length whenever
possible. so you can imagine my surprise when i used math as an analogy to
describe to a friend the lesson of prioritizing my pursuit of the Lord. here is
what i said:

“what a lesson. it’s not a new one. but if i could equate
it to a math class, i’d say i’m no longer taking arithmetic when it comes to
pursuing Him…He has enrolled me in quantum physics
.

this analogy spurred me to do some research on mathematics
(the one and ONLY time i’ve done ANY
research on math). did you know that it is
subdivided into four categories? it is the study of: quantity, structure, space, and change. each subdivision consists of a
different kind of math. for example, arithmetic is under the subdivision of
‘quantity’ where quantum physics is under ‘change.’

as i journey to the end of myself, one of the roads the Lord
is leading me down is having a deeper understanding of what it means to pursue
intimacy with Himself. so, naturally, i want to take the four subdivisions of
math and use it to study what it means to pursue intimacy with the Lord in
respect to ‘quantity,’ ‘structure,’ ‘space,’ and ‘change.’ i will be sure to
blog about it. but for now…i need to experience it.
