Hola amigos!
We made to San Salvador, which is the capital of El Salvador. Squad training in Antigua, Guatemala went really well. It was fun to reunite with all of the Squad mates… I truly enjoy all 62 of them, which is pretty incredible. We have such a fun time laughing with one another and sharing stories. Our training focused on what a healthy community looks like, keeping a positive attitude, and remembering that this year we are to put others before ourselves… we are here to serve. Our last day together we hiked to the top of the Volcano Pacaya and roasted marshmallows over the hot lava. Took about 2 seconds to get a perfectly brown marshmallow!
Yesterday was our travel day, we road 7 hours in a van with a great driver who was able to dodge all of the pigs and cows in our way. 🙂 We were very blessed with no hassle at the borders. We were lost for a while entering San Salvador, but everyone handled it really well and we considered it a team bonding experience. Dustin did a great job communicating with our driver and his Spanish has come back to him incredibly well!
We arrived in San Salvador which looks a lot like a city in America. Our translator told us El Salvador is beginning to try to imitate the US; they take American dollars, we ate a Wendy’s, they drive Fords, BMWs, have paved roads, etc.
Our work for this month looks very diverse. We arrived last night at the Teen Challenge program. Teen Challenge is a ministry which helps guys who are rehabilitating from drug addictions. (The pastor and translator, who lived in America a while, briefed us that the men here are safe, but not to leave things sitting around. They are very cautious of our safety.) They have spent time in jail, or realized that was not the life they wanted and sought out this Christian program which helps many overcome their addictions through God’s Word and providing a sense of family. A few had spent time in America, so it was interesting to hear their stories. I got up and introduced our group, and then each of us told our story of how we became Christians and why we chose to participate on the World Race. Hearing their stories of transfomation were super encouraging.
We will work 6 days a week and take Fridays off to rest and travel. Some travel days include visiting Mayan ruins, going to the beach, and hiking a local volcano.
We truly have a wonderful setup here, I’ll include a photo, but it has definitely surpassed all of our expectations!
Thinking of you all and love you lots!
I’m including some pictures of the volcano hike and where we are sitting right now. We’ve had beautiful weather!!
Some things I am getting used to: digging through my backpack for the things I need every day, taking medications each morning, throwing toilet paper in a wastebasket rather than the toilet, and have found my favorite mode of transportation is the back of a truck. 🙂
