This one is for my Vandy crew! 😉
This past Friday night we went out into Oceanview and did street ministry from 9p-10p (so we thought- God had other plans). Our first stop was a group of teenagers smoking hookah. We chatted and prayed over them then moved onto another area. David was leading us and he told us we were in some of the most dangerous areas with lots of drugs.
We approached this group of guys who were drinking and listening to music. They really didn’t want to hear about what we had to say but wanted to talk about Lil Wayne. We let them talk a lot and simply listened. At the end we prayed for them. One of the guys (Dino) was standing there and as David was wanting to leave…I felt led to speak with Dino and share some words with him…found out his grandfather was a preacher and he told me he knew right from wrong.
As we were talking I look to my right and see this bike flying down a hill and I thought they were going around the two people walking, but instead collided with the lady. Her feet went out from under her and she landed on her back and hit her head. My first thoughts were complete shock and “Jesus I’m off duty.” lol
I ran over to assess the situation and asked if someone could call for help. I began asking if anyone who spoke Afrikaans could see if she was alright..she was clearly unconscious and not responding. The crowd began to increase and I knew we needed to pray. I held her hand and checked her pulse and respirations. Audra knelt down with me and we began praying. The Holy Spirit was definitely there and I remember feeling like nobody was around us. We prayed healing and comfort over her.
The crowd kept increasing and one man came up and started throwing water on her face and shaking her. We asked him to leave because he didn’t understand we were trying to keep her neck steady in case of a spinal injury. Meredith held her neck for me as we log rolled her onto her side because she was having lots of secretions at the time and I didn’t want her to aspirate. (All my CVICU nurses- I thought about y’all— can somebody get me the suction please!?!)
I can’t remember much else other than holding her hand and comforting her…checking her pulse, praying for our safety and praying the ambulance would quickly arrive. (We were told sometimes it can take several hours) Some of the girls asked if there was anything I needed and just told them to keep praying. I explained to some of the family once they got there what had happened and she was ok vital signs wise but waiting on the ambulance to arrive. They finally arrived about 45 minutes later and explained what happened. They loaded her up on the stretcher and left.
We finally walked home and were in awe of God’s plans and how he used a situation to glorify him. One thing that stuck out in my head was hearing a lady say, “Nobody here cares about our people” as Audra Meredith, Lauren and I (Americans) lie in the street with this lady we don’t know and holding her hand…comforting her…just as Jesus would have done.
What God taught me out of this situation is…we are never off duty for Him. No matter what our career choice is….we must respond and take action to His call.
