One week. One week until I board a plane for Seattle and then onto Cambodia! I’m still trying to grasp that. How may months have I have been planning and preparing for this trip? And now it is finally here! Wow.
But honestly, I have been plenty distracted by all the busy preparation…making sure that taxes are ready, bills are paid, writing thank-you notes (and there are still plenty of those ones–long overdue!), and making sure that everything is covered for the next 4 1/2 months. Can I just tell you that it feels fantastic to scratch off an item on my to-do list? Love it!
However, I have been reminded quite frequently over the last few weeks that I’m missing the most important thing in getting ready to leave. God keeps bringing me back to the passage in Luke 10 about Mary and Martha. Today, this is the verse that popped out at me…
“But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made.”
(Luke 10:40a)
Maybe I should just substitute my name for Martha’s–it would be completely true! It is “crunch time.” I work super well under pressure but then the most important thing gets neglected and pushed aside because I run out of time in the day or I’m just tired from burning the candle on both ends. Yes, I’m just like Martha–distracted by al the preparations.
However, I deeply desire to be like Mary. I REALLY want to switch my name with her name and have that describe me in this last week and all the days to come!
“ Mary, who seated herself at the Lord’s feet and was listening to His teaching…
There is need of only one or but a few things. Mary has chosen the good portion [that which is to her advantage], which shall not be taken away from her.”
(Luke 10:39, 42)
So, Lord…What would you have to say to me today? I’m listening.
PS…as I was thinking about Martha and Mary I thought of some other verses. If you want to look them up here they are: I Samuel 3:1-10; Mark 9:7; John 10:1-27; I Chronicles 22:19; Jeremiah 30:21; I Corinthians 7:34
