I’m sure that 99% of you who read this blog have played the
game Connect Four. I know that I
have played it with my niece and nephew a few times! Well, after my second time walking the area of Patong Beach
and Bangla Road the other evening, playing Connect Four has taken on a whole
different meaning and is now more than just a game.
All of the bars in the area have games at their counters to
start interaction with customers.
They typically have Jenga (set up very differently! See picture), Jackpot, some type of
nail game and Connect Four.
Playing games is definitely a way to break the language barrier, have a
little bit of friendly competition, laugh and be able to hang out a while.
Jenga–Thailand Style

The first night that I went out was actually a holiday here
and it was completely quiet. We
did get to have longer conversations with the girls because they were just
hanging out rather than staying in their rooms. So, the second night that I went out was my introduction to
a typical night on Bangla Road. As
my group walked around we came upon this bar that we decided to sit down
in. A young lady came over to take
our orders-we always get funny looks since we only order pop. We then asked her for a game to play
and then the conversation took off.
She ended up playing a few rounds with each of us and winning most of
them! Throughout the course of a
few games of Connect Four we were able to get to know her just a little bit
better. We didn’t want to overstay
our welcome so we headed out after a while. However, I do look forward to going back again soon,
challenging her to Connect Four and being a vessel that Jesus can use to reach
her.
So, the next time you play Connect Four take a few minutes
to touch the heart of God and pray for these precious women on Bangla Road.
