When I signed up for the World Race I had seen multiple videos and read the blogs telling me “what to expect” on the World Race. I lived for these moments and could not wait until we had a crazy moment where we could say,
“Only on the World Race”
Well, this past month in Australia became a series of the “welcome to the World Race” moments. Within the first day in the Land Down Under we had our first experience… cooking hot dogs on the engine of our troupie. Here is the recipe for Outback hotdogs.
1. Wrap hotdogs in tin foil.
2 Place hot dogs on top of the engine.
3. Close the hood of the car.
4. Drive for about 30 – 45 minutes.
5. Pull over and take the hot dogs off of the engine.
6. Unwrap and enjoy!
We also had many other moments including…
Sleeping ON TOP of the troupie in a tent
Swimming in a paradise like spring
Seeing creepy spiders in aforementioned spring
Seeing amazing vistas, valleys, and canyons in the outback
Eating water buffalo steak while fishing with our aboriginal friends Lazarus and Lisa
Eating a Kangaroo sausage, a Kangaroo steak, a Kangaroo burger, and a Camel burger. (they had LOTS more but I didn’t have time to eat much)
Holding a baby Kangaroo appropriately named Joey, that had become orphaned after its mother died.
Walking across a river twice
Being stuck in the Outback
Attending a “Toad Muster”
And the grand finale… Making a SNORKEL for our troupie in order to cross the river!!
How to Make a Snorkel 101
1. Find random bits of trash that you can put together to create a useable snorkel.
2. Remove old, rusted muffler from car down stream in the middle of the river
3. Grab soda bottle (bottom cut off), duct tape, plastic bread bag, athletic tape, muffler and rope.
4. Use duct tape, bag and soda bottle to create a seal to put in the air filter. Fit on muffler and seal with duct tape and athletic tape (once you run our of duct tape)
5. Pray REALLY hard that it will work.
6. Cross river
7. Freak out a bit when water starts coming in the holes in the back door. Prayer harder that we won’t get swept down stream.
8. Rejoice once we get to dry land.
9. Assess how the engine fared.
10. Celebrate the fact that it worked, we didn’t kill the engine and that we’re all alive!!
